An opa-scope is used to project both opaque and transparent material onto a screen within a darkened environment - the generic term for these devices is epidiascope. This visual material was usually presented to small groups by individuals who were conducting educational or training programs, entertaining or professional presentations. Other technologies providing this type of facility at the time include the blackboard, slide projectors and overhead projectors. One of the largest users of this type of technology was the education department where they were used to present educational and training material to small groups. Opa-scopes were used extensively from the mid 1960s to the late 1970s when there was a movement toward incorporating other media as learning tools within state and federal educational institutions. Although we do not know the provenance of this opa-scope it is exactly the type of unit that was used for this purpose
